9:00 a.m – 9:30 a.m. Registration ($5.00).  Refreshments courtesy of Vernier Software and Technology

9:30 a.m.  Opening Greeting  Greg Mulder, Oregon Section AAPT President

9:30 a.m.-9:50  James Butler, Pacific University,   jbutler@pacificu.edu

“Optics, Fourier Analysis, and Maple: An Integrated Lab"

9:50-10:10  John Griffith, Linn-Benton Community College, GRIFFIJ@linnbenton.edu

"Why Would You Use A Personal Response System In A Class Of 36 Students?”

10:10-10:25  Break

10:30-11:45 Richard Wiener, Pacific University,  wienerr@pacificu.edu

“Control of Chaos in a Simple Electronic Oscillator",

11:45- 12:05  Stephen Hall, Pacific University,  hall@pacificu.edu

“Understanding the sky: a different emphasis in an Introductory Astronomy course”

12:05-12:25  Robert E. Behringer, rebehringer@msn.com

“The Ultimate Physics Course” The role and responsibility of the physics teacher does not end when the teacher leaves the classroom at the end of the day.  To illustrate I shall take as an example the very important fact facing civilization at this time that natural resources required to sustain life are finite and world population continues to grow.

12:25-1:35 p.m.  LUNCH  (we will order from a local restaurant and have lunch delivered, ~$6.00)

1:35  -  1:50  Walter Hellman, Hillsboro High School,  hellman@teleport.com

“Galilean Tracks and Their Use in the Lab  A two minute lab prep for explorations in kinematics.  (No Batteries Required)

1:50-2:05  Lawrence Ruby, Art Institute of Portland,  LarryorJudyRuby@cs.com
“Geometric Optics Developed From Least Action”  The Principle of Least Action is fundamental to classical mechanics, relativity theory, and to quantum mechanics.  We will show how the Principle can also be used to develop geometric optics, leading finally to the Thin Lens Equation.

2:05-2:25  John Bell, Western Baptist College,   jbell@wbc.edu

“Pin Linked Structures - Simplifying statics  The concepts of vectors are practiced in bridges where vectors are clearly defined and manipulated. Students easily relate the bridges they construct to familiar structures. The construction uses only two types items although supporting materials can add to the challenge. The presentation can be adjusted to target students at various levels. The materials used in the construction are easily assembled.

2:25 p.m2:45  Emily Townsend, Pacific University, town6812@pacificu.edu

2:45- 3:20   Stanley Micklavzina- University of Oregon  stanm@hendrix.uoregon.edu
